“In the digital age, seeing works like Jennette Williams's series The Bathers is a delight. The images depict women in bathhouses in Hungary and Turkey; the nude or mostly nude bodies belong to women of all sizes and shapes. Under Williams's lens they shine with true beauty. These stunning platinum prints of women bathers in Budapest and Istanbul take us inside spaces intimate and public, austere and sensuous. Over a period of eight years, Williams, who is based in New York City, traveled to Hungary and Turkey to photograph, without sentimentality or objectification, women daring enough to stand naked before her camera.

A newly released photo-book titled Bathers narrates Kaplan’s experiences through a series of black and white on a medium format film camera, the use of a wide-angle lens allowed the photographer to get close to her subjects, rendering folds of flesh dimpled with cellulite in high-contrast, or capturing the peculiar ambience of a bath house via its surrounding architecture. A photography instructor at the School of Visual Arts in New York City, Williams is the fourth recipient of the biennial Center for Documentary Studies/Honickman First Book Prize in Photography. Mary Ellen Mark judged the prize, selecting the pictures of women bathers from three hundred entries, and wrote the foreword to Williams’s prize.

It says a lot if a painter covers so many topics and yet becomes known for a specific one instead. Linda Nochlin, in her book on bathers, wrote “pliant, seductive, natural, Renoir’s bathers embody a whole tradition of masculine mastery and feminine display which underpins so . Linda Nochlin (née Weinberg; Janu – Octo ) was an American art historian, Lila Acheson Wallace Professor Emerita of Modern Art at New York University Institute of Fine Arts, and writer. A prominent feminist art historian, she became well known for her pioneering article " Why Have There Been No Great Women Born: Linda Weinberg, Janu , New York City, .
